Browntop Thumb

This very hardy species is grown from seed; in NZ you'll usually see it blended with other species. Spreads by underground runners (rhizomes), so it's self-repairing if damaged.

About Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass makes an attractive lawn, with distinctive strappy upright leaves. It forms a dense mat of turf by sending out underground rhizomes that rapidly fill in patchy areas. Hardier than bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass withstands winter chill and frosts in Southern climates, so it's often blended with other cool-season grasses to fortify them.

It also does well in temperate areas, where it's used in mixtures with ryegrass and tall fescue.

Kentucky bluegrass lawns are more resistant to wear than most cool-season grasses, but thin out when poorly maintained or too closely cut. Apply fertiliser in both spring and early autumn (but not in summer while it's under heat stress). Lenient mowing at a cutting height of 3–5 cm is strongly recommended. Sow seed in spring or autumn, at a rate of 2kg per 100m2.

Seedlings emerge in three to four weeks after sowing.
