Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is quite shade tolerant, but also thrives in full sun. It's happy in a wide range of soil conditions and can handle pH ranges from 5 - 7.5 (although it grows best between 5.5 - 6.5). Tall fescue has the best drought tolerance of all cool season lawn types, allowing it to grow better through the summer than the others. It's extremely frost tolerant and copes with long and intense rain periods as well. Tall fescue's natural hardiness makes it a very versatile all-rounder.
It has the widest leaf blade of the cool season varieties, at 5-8mm.
Its method of spread is both by seed and rhizomes. The width of spread via rhizomes differs between cultivars, but it's never as aggressive or fast-growing as other spreading (stoloniferous) grasses. For that reason, if you have bare patches it's best to reseed rather than wait for tall fescue to fill in by itself.
It prefers mowing above 15mm.
