Usually grown as a spring annual plant, Stactice (Limonium sinuatum) are great for creating accents and colour in your garden or potted garden. Statice are a favourite with kids with their everlasting, paper-textured flowers which are available in a vibrant selection of colours. They are beautiful cut flowers and will add vibrance to any room in your house
How to grow statice in a garden
- Fill starter pots or trays with Yates Black Magic Seed Raising Mix. Sow seeds to a depth of 6 mm, cover, firm down and water well. Keep the soil moist so the seeds don’t dry out.
- While the seedlings are growing, choose a spot in the garden that receives full sun and prepare the planting area well by digging in Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food.
- Allow the seedlings to grow to at least 5 cm before transplanting.
- When transplanting them into your prepared garden bed, ensure seedlings are well spaced – at least 30-40 cm apart. Water in well with diluted Yates Thrive Natural Seaweed Tonic to help reduce transplant shock and promote root growth.
- Mulch with an organic mulch, such as bark chips, woodchip or pea straw.
- Feed regularly during the growing and flowering season with Yates Thrive Rose & Flower Granular Plant Food. TIP: For an added boost, apply Yates Thrive Fish Blood & Bone Plant Food Concentrate.
How to grow statice in a pot
- Choose a pot at least 200 mm wide and deep. Position in full sun.
- Fill the chosen pots with quality potting mix, such as Yates Premium Potting Mix.
- Plant directly into the pot by sowing seeds to a depth of 6 mm into the surface of the pot, cover and firm down.
- Water gently and keep moist through germination period.
- Once the seedlings have grown at least 5 cm, place a light layer of organic mulch, such as woodchip or pea straw around the base of the plant.
- Feed regularly during the growing and flowering season with Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food. TIP: For an added boost, apply Yates Thrive Fish Blood & Bone Plant Food Concentrate.
Growing tips
- This is an ideal dried flower variety that holds its colour well. Hang with heads down in a well-aired indoor position until fully dried.
- For an interesting look, make up a vase of Yates Waterwise Water Storage Crystals and add a touch of food colouring of your choice – sit flower stems in crystals mix.
