Cymbidium orchids (Cymbidium spp.) display a profusion of beautiful flowers during winter and early spring. The gorgeous flowers can be multi-coloured and come in shades of pink, purple, burgundy, white, green, yellow, salmon and orange. These orchids are a great choice for the beginner gardener (as well as green thumbs!) as they are hardy and easy to care for.
How to grow cymbidium in a garden
- Choose a well drained spot in the garden that gets dappled sunlight during the day and protection from the afternoon sun.
- Fill the area where they are to grow with specialised orchid mix.
- Dig the planting hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root-ball. Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.
- Position in hole and backfill, gently firming down. Sprinkle some pellets of Yates Thrive Natural Blood & Bone with Seaweed on top of the plant.
- Water in well
- Feed with Yates Thrive Orchid Liquid Plant Food every 2-4 weeks.
How to grow cymbidium orchid in a pot
- Choose a pot that has adequate drainage holes and place it in a position that gets dappled sunlight during the day and protection from the afternoon sun.
- Fill with Yates Thrive Orchid Potting Mix.
- Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.
- Position in hole and backfill, gently firming down.
- Water in well.
- Feed with Yates Thrive Orchid Liquid Plant Food every 2-4 weeks or use a Yates Thrive Indoor Orchids Liquid Plant Food Drippers which feeds for 4 weeks.
Growing tips
- Best time to divide orchids is after they have finished flowering, usually in mid to late spring.
- Reduce watering in winter as they dislike having cold wet roots.
- Start feeding your orchid after the flowering period is over. A light sprinkling of Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser pellets every six weeks is ideal. After Christmas start feeding with Yates Thrive Orchid Liquid Plant Food every 2-4 weeks.
- Cymbidium flower spikes make a lovely and long lasting cut flower. Don’t leave dead flower spikes on the plant. Remove them as soon as blooms have finished.
- Orchids flower best when they experience a marked (at least 10˚C) difference between daytime and night time temperatures.
ZZ Plant
ZZ plant is a beautiful leafy plant with thick, glossy green leaves. It can be grown outdoors and makes a fantastic almost un-killable indoor plant.
