Leatherleaf fern (Rumohra adiantiformis) is an attractive fern with long, green glossy stems and triangular, finely dissected fronds. The leatherleaf fern can be grown successfully indoors or planted outdoors in temperate climates. The leathery fronds of this fern stay fresh for lengthy periods after cutting, so no wonder they’re a favourite with florists!
How to grow leather leaf fern in a garden
- Choose a partly shaded to full shade position in the garden.
- Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root-ball. To improve soil quality add Yates Thrive Natural Blood & Bone with Seaweed to the soil removed from the hole.
- Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots and cut away any circled or tangled roots.
- Position in hole at the same depth as it was planted in the pot. Backfill with the enriched soil, gently firming down. Water in well.
- Water the plant regularly during the warmer months of the year, water moderately during winter.
- Feed every 2 weeks with Yates Thrive All Purpose Liquid Plant Food to promote strong root development and healthy foliage growth.
How to grow leather leaf fern in a pot
- Choose a spot indoors that is well lit but away from direct sunlight.
- Fill the pot with Yates Thrive Indoor Plants Potting Mix which has been specially formulated to suit both indoor and outdoor plants.
- Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots and cut away any circled or tangled roots.
- Position in hole and backfill with potting mix, gently firming down. Water in well keeping the water away from the leaves.
- Water the plant regularly to keep the potting mix moist.
- Feed every 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Indoor Liquid Plant Food to promote strong root development and healthy foliage growth.
Growing tips
These plants grow best positioned in a cool, draught free brightly lit position indoors.
This fern will grow outdoors only in temperate to warm climates; choose a sheltered spot receiving indirect sunlight.
