Poa annua
A tufty-looking, soft, light green grass species with masses of seed heads. It outcompetes genuine lawn grass during winter and will eventually take over.
Poa forms seeds throughout autumn, winter and spring, but dies off in prolonged hot periods in summer. Because other lawn grass species are weakened from Poa encroaching on their space, they become vulnerable to a fast takeover by germinating Poa seed in the following cool season. Poa seed sets even when mowing at very low cutting heights, so it can spread through a lawn very quickly.
An irritating trait of Poa is its light green colour; it forms contrasting, highly visible mottled patches in a well-maintained lawn.
Spot-spray Poa with a non-selective weedkiller such as Yates Zero Super Concentrate Weedkiller, or pull it out (including roots) by hand. Make certain to spray or hand-remove patches of Poa before it sets seed.
Ensure the lawn is well maintained and fertilised, with a complete lawn fertiliser like Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Lawn Food.
