Grow your own popcorn! This is a really special, old-fashioned type of corn, that grows cute little cobs shaped like ruby-red strawberries. You can sow these seeds in your garden, and wait for corn cob ears to grow on the stalks. Then harvest the corn cobs and let them dry out. When they're dry, you can make your own yummy popcorn. Popcorn tastes even better when you grew it by yourself!
Sow direct where they are to grow, when soil is warm. No further watering is needed until seedlings appear. Plant seeds in blocks of short rows, or plant in a small circle or clump to ensure better pollination and yield.
Plant in a well drained, sunny position. Prepare soil by adding Yates Thrive Natural Blood & Bone. Water and liquid fertilise regularly with Yates Thrive All Purpose Soluble Plant Food (particularly in early stages of growth). Leave the ears on the plants; they are ready to pick when the stalks and leaves have faded to brown. After picking, let the ears dry out for a month, by hanging them up in a dry place. Remove the kernels from the dried cob by twisting (wear gloves) or rubbing two cobs together.
If you are also growing sweetcorn, plant it at least 30m away from your Strawberry Popcorn to stop it cross-pollinating, otherwise your sweetcorn might taste a bit strange.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
