To celebrate our 140th year in the seed business, we're excited to bring back some old, old favourites from our archives!
Traditionally grown in Italy and France, these visually striking, long red onions are highly versatile. Their mild, sweet flavour brings a lovely dimension to salads, sandwiches and wraps. Enjoy roasted or grilled, also a great addition to potato salads and risotto.
Sow direct where they are to grow or in trays of Yates Black Magic® Seed Raising Mix. Firm down and keep moist. If transplanting seedlings, transfer when about 10 cm tall. Allow about 10 cm between each seedling.
Plant in a well-drained, sunny position adding Yates Thrive® Natural Blood & Bone to the soil before planting. Keep seedlings well watered. Make successive sowings every few weeks. Feed fortnightly with Yates Thrive® Natural Fish Seaweed + Plant Food. Harvest when bulb is formed and tops wilt. Protect from snails and slugs.
Great to grow with salad ingredients such as basil, lettuce, parsley, cucumber, beetroot, radish and carrots. Avoid overwatering - seeds may rot before germination if soil is too wet.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct Sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
