Pungent, sharp tasting Bitter Melon is highly prized in Indian, Chinese and South East Asian cuisines. A marvellous flavour match with hot chillies or rich fatty meats, it can be steamed, pan-fried or stuffed with spicy fillings. A high quinine content delivers the distinctive astringent tang and makes the juice a classic ingredient in Ayurvedic remedies. This attractive dark green spiny hybrid is a vigorous grower and produces heavy yields.
Also known as Ku Gua, Fu Ga, Ampelaya, Nigauri and Khổ Qua, although this variety is the spiky Indian fruit form.
Soak seed in water for 24 hours before sowing. For best results, sow early in pots of Yates® Black Magic® Seed Raising Mix, indoors or in a glasshouse, then transplant after 3-4 weeks when risk of frost has passed. Space seedlings 60cm apart alongside a strong trellis or fence (1.8m high) for support.
Grow in a very sunny, sheltered, well-drained position. Prepare soil by adding Yates® Thrive® Natural Blood & Bone and feed every 2 weeks with Yates® Thrive® Flower & Fruit Soluble Fertiliser. Water regularly at plant base.
Karela is sensitive to cold, so soil temperature should be at least 25°C for germination. Use of a heat pad is recommended.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
