A classic choice in Indian, Chinese and South East Asian cuisines, succulent young Luffa fruits are a deliciously versatile ingredient in stir fries, steamed, in soups, or curries. With a similar delicate taste and texture to zucchini, Luffa soaks up the flavours it is paired with. A delightful match with eggs, fish, prawns, garlic, ginger, lemongrass or onion. Or, leave the fruits on the vine and harvest your own exfoliating loofahs!
Soak seed in water for 24 hours before sowing. For best results, sow early in pots of Yates® Black Magic® Seed Raising Mix, indoors or in a glasshouse (a heat pad is recommended), then transplant after 3-4 weeks when risk of frost has passed. For direct sowing (soil temperature should be at least 21°C for germination), press 3-4 seeds into mounds of moist soil, 40cm apart. Later thin to the two strongest plants. Plant beside a strong trellis or fence (1.8m high) for support.
Grow in a very sunny, well-drained position. Prepare soil by adding Yates® Thrive® Natural Blood & Bone. Water regularly at plant base.
Harvest the fruit for eating when 10-15cm long.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
