If you like zucchini, you'll love Zucchetta - a delightful Italian heirloom squash that grows prolific curvy, bulb-ended fruit on climbing, scrambling vines. Succulent young fruits are used just like zucchini, but have a slightly sweeter, nuttier flavour and no seeds in the long neck. Train them up a trellis to harvest straight-necked Zucchetta, or let them sprawl on the ground and grow crazy curly trombones.
For early sowing, raise in pots of Yates® Black Magic® Seed Raising Mix in a well-lit, protected spot. Transplant after 3-4 weeks. For direct sowing press 3-4 seeds into mounds of moist soil 1m apart. Later thin to the two strongest plants.
Select a sunny, well-drained position. Mix Yates® Thrive® Natural Blood & Bone into soil before sowing. Keep well watered at base of plant. Fruit is best picked young and tender. Protect from snails and slugs.
For heavier crops, brush pollen from male flowers onto female flowers (the ones with a baby tromboncino at the base). Keep well mulched.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
