I am so thrilled. Never have I grown a cabbage anything like this!
I have decided that cabbage success comes with row covers to keep those pesky caterpillars away. I needed a little more care with the slug bait, but the wet weather prevented me & of course helped them. Still, it was pretty close to perfect in my experience!
I have tried making sauerkraut twice. Only 2 out of 8 in our family actually like sauerkraut & mine wasn't the best. Since this cabbage was so good lookin', I decided to go with the 'nostalgic recipe' as Sarah put it.
My mum used to make this simple recipe when I was growing up. In a cast iron skillet fry shredded cabbage until it wilts down, diced onion & at the last moment, ham (or bacon would work). Serve with salt & pepper.
