Our vegetable garden is as beautiful and decorative to me as my flower garden. Yes, flowers are gorgeous, some of them smell amazing but the home economist in me says that they don't earn their keep like a lettuce, a capsicum, a celery plant, a potato, a tomato.... or a bean!
And to me these plants are as pretty as a flower border, especially when massed together in a potager style garden.
Take these beans for instance. I have grown them over an arch that Super Husband fashioned for me. They are purple beans (which turn green and are delicious when cooked) that grow prolifically. I mean you get a serious crop of these beans as long as you keep picking them. They have been producing since late November and as you can see are still going strong. To be honest we are nearly "beaned out", but I have kept them there because they look so beautiful.
If you do have a glut of beans one of my fave things to do is blanch them for few minutes in boiling water, shock them briefly in icy water (to keep their nice green colour) and then stir fry them in olive oil with chopped garlic and chilli... delicious!
