On the face of it this is exciting news, spring is just around the corner, but to be honest it terrifies me a little. For a start, how can we be this far through the year already?! I think the lack of a descent summer has messed with my sense of order and timing and it has been one long winter-esk year. I’m hoping the change to the El Nino weather pattern will give us something different, but I guess we have to be careful with what we wish for as this may result in a hot summer and potential drought conditions again.
The other bit that has me concerned is, I still have a lot I want to do in the garden before the seasons change again. I have every intention of setting up an espalier fruit tree system in the garden and I am hoping this will be 3rd times a charm and my trees won’t die in the face of our harsh conditions like their predecessors.
Then there is the blueberry cage, that last season’s working model proved to be a success and now I need to make it a permanent feature, so I can continue to beat the birds to the plump blue berries. While I’m constructing things my squash frame needs a redesign and I have an idea that just might work.
Of course there is the big prespring clean up where all the beds are treated to compost, blood and bone, and Dynamic Lifter. Well, the ones that don’t have crops in them still or already or are covered in a mustard green manure. I have made good progress here, but there is still more to do.
Aside from that I have a mountain of writing to do, but at least this gives me something to do on a rainy day, which we seem to be having too many of them lately as I champ at the bit to get outdoors and build things in the garden.
I also need to make time to go through my seed tin and make sure I have everything I need for the spring. There is nothing more annoying than reaching in to find an empty packet in the midst of a seed sowing session.
Winter is often a season of restoring a gardener in the comfort of a warm and cosy living room, with a steaming bowl of soup, with days filled with dreams of summer days. And yet I find myself just as busy in this brutal season as I am in the midst of spring!
I hope things are much more sedate in your gardens and your plans for the new growing season are coming together nicely.
As always if you have any problems or anything you need help with or if you want to get in touch leave a comment below. I’ll be here checking on things when I'm not braving the elements in the garden.
