In between the weather I have been full steam ahead in my garden. I have – possibly foolishly – decided to have an open day in my garden this weekend. I have all sorts of people coming from all over. I lay awake at 4:30am this morning thinking about the parking! But the weeds are also of concern. This weather is prime weed growing weather and as soon as you feel you are on top of it, you turn your back and they come back again, and not to mention those neglected corners that aren’t hidden away. Just because I don’t go there often doesn’t mean you can’t see them. Eek – I have so much still to do. I think I will get there in the end.
In a different situation I would be pulling up my beetroot and pickling it, but then there would just be a gap in the garden to tell people ‘That is where the beetroot was’, so another week won’t hurt. Technically there should be quite a few gaps in the garden, so I imagine next week will be a kitchen gardening week!
There other thing I have been grateful for is the break in the weather. It rained so much I didn’t think it would ever end, but then it has surprised us by being nice. The rain gave a lovely deep moist base to the garden, that I haven’t needed to water, but now I’m thinking… hmmm, maybe I should take care of that. There is another storm brewing, but if I don’t water, then Murphy’s law it will miss us completely….
The powdery mildew found the garden this week and the pest numbers are on the increase so I need to find time to spray things. With the insect pests it is a good idea to alternate between two or more products that will take care of them, so they don’t build up resistance. In these warm conditions they have fast lifecycles and can be quite adaptable.
So the best part of my week will be spent in a frenzied panic, weeding, cleaning, tidying and sorting things out for the open day. The up side – I hope – will be the garden will be in a good position going forward that I can just enjoy a bit of tinkering and maybe find time for something else… like making cheese. I saw some cheese making comments and remembered I used to do that. It would be good to get back into it.
