A tasty and prolific broad bean selected by Denis Hughes in Tapanui, Otago. 'Hughey' produces attractive scarlet flowers that add some welcome Winter colour to the garden. The succulent, nutty flavoured beans stay bright green when cooked. This is a tall growing variety that needs some form of support or staking.
Sow direct where they are to grow in cultivated, well drained soil. Make a trench 4cm deep and 15cm wide. Sow seeds at 15cm intervals along each side of trench. Cover with soil and water well. Do not water again until seedlings emerge.
Choose a Sunny, well-drained position. For best results prepare soil by digging in Yates Thrive Natural Yates Thrive Natural Garden Lime and Yates Thrive Natural Sulphate of Potash. If low temperatures are experienced in early Spring, some bud drop may occur. This is natural and new flowers will quickly follow. Plants may need some support as they can reach 1 metre in height. Protect from snails and slugs.
Great companion plant for cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, potatos & spinach. Avoid overwatering - seeds may rot before germination if soil is too wet.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct Sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
